How to Use Handcuffs for Sex

Handcuffs are the entry point for a lot of people. Accessible, direct, loaded with the right kind of symbolism. And genuinely effective — there's a reason they show up everywhere from KINK.com productions to people's first foray into restraint play. The question isn't whether they work. It's how to use them so they work well.

THE FOUNDATION

Before the cuffs go on, two things need to exist: explicit agreement and a way out. Agreement means both people have actively said yes to this specific thing. A way out means a safeword — and a spare key within reach.

We keep this non-negotiable on set. You should too.

THE GEAR

Not all handcuffs are equal. Police-style steel cuffs with a double-lock mechanism are the standard for a reason — the double-lock prevents them from tightening further once set, which is exactly what you want. Cheap novelty cuffs can ratchet down under tension and cut off circulation.

Before use: confirm the double-lock is engaged (there's usually a small hole you press with a key tip). Confirm fit — two fingers between the cuff and wrist. Confirm you have two keys.

Hinged cuffs restrict wrist rotation more than chain-link cuffs. For first-timers, chain-link gives more movement and less disorientation.

TECHNIQUE

Hands in front is the right starting point. It's stable, less stressful on shoulders, and gives the restrained person more grounding. Hands behind the back escalates intensity significantly — don't start there.

Attach the cuffs to something fixed if you want the person fully immobilized. Unanchored cuffs still restrict, but they allow more movement than most people expect.

Keep scenes short until you know how someone's body and mind respond. Twenty minutes is plenty to start.

DURING THE SCENE

Check in on sensation. Numbness or tingling in the fingers means the cuffs are affecting circulation — remove immediately and let blood flow return before reassessing. Press a fingernail into a fingertip every ten minutes: white to pink immediately is the sign you want.

Don't leave a cuffed person alone. Ever.

AFTERCARE

After removal, rub warmth back into the wrists. There may be redness or light indentation — normal. Sit together for a few minutes. The physical release can bring an emotional one, and some people need a moment to land.
